In the early 1960's Dr. Stan & Kay Haukeness and their six children moved to Durango. While there were many wonderful churches in the area, there was no ELCA Lutheran church. They shared their desire for a Lutheran congregation with their former pastor, who in turn passed it on to the Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod. One day the Rev. Roger Pettenger arrived on their doorstep ready to knock on every door in Durango. In 1964, the charter was signed by 65 adults making Christ the King Lutheran a reality.
Today the congregation has around 500 members with 200 being at worship on any given weekend at one of three services. The building that was built on the edge of town in a gravel pit has tripled in size, is used 365 days a year and includes an infant to toddler day care center and a beautiful Memorial Garden.
This community of faith pledges: "to love and serve God by proclaiming Christ's Gospel, strengthening worship, deepening discipleship, and serving our congregation, community and world." Please know there is a place and a ministry for you in our family.
May your visit here introduce CtK and the God that we love and serve.
In Christ's Love, Pastor John Knutson
